Emergency COVID-19 Treatment in Dallas

Merck’s Molnupiravir and Pfizer’s Paxlovid Treatment

At Advance ER, we are keeping close tabs on the novel coronavirus to keep our community and patients protected. We offer two types of Covid-19 pills: Merck’s Molnupiravir and Pfizer’s Paxlovid. They have both received authorization from the Federal Drug Administration for emergency use. We can prescribe either of these oral treatments while supplies last.

Covid-19 oral antiviral medications can treat mild to moderate infections, but we do not prescribe them as preventative care or if you need immediate hospitalization. These treatments aim to slow down the spread of the virus in your body when you are at a high risk of severe infection that could result in future hospitalization or death.

Our providers may consider another Covid-19 treatment if you are:

  • Sexually active and able to get pregnant
  • Sexually active with a partner who can get pregnant
  • Using hormonal birth control
  • Trying to conceive
  • Pregnant
  • Breastfeeding

We also recommend that you let us know about any current medications, whether prescription, over-the-counter, or other supplements, you are taking. Our staff members also consider any allergies or medical conditions you may have to make sure taking Molnupiravir or Paxlovid is safe for you.

What Is the Merck’s Molnupiravir Pill?

You may be eligible to take Molnupiravir if you are 18 years or older. Always follow your medical provider’s instructions, including how long you should stay in isolation. A Molnupiravir prescription plan usually involves taking 4 capsules every 12 hours for five days. Never discontinue treatment without speaking to your doctor first. You may take the pills with or without food.

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you can if it has been less than 10 hours, or skip it if it has been longer. Never double the dose to make up for a missed one.

Possible side effects of Molnupiravir include diarrhea, nausea, and dizziness.

Am I a Candidate for the Pfizer’s Paxlovid Pill?

Paxlovid can treat mild to moderate Covid-19 infections in adults and children who are 12 years or older and weigh at least 88 pounds. Make sure to take the medication as prescribed by your doctor. You can take the pills with or without food. You must complete your treatment even if you feel better.

Paxlovid consists of two medicines: nirmatrelvir and ritonavir. A treatment plan generally involves taking two pink tablets of nirmatrelvir and one white tablet of ritonavir at the same time in the morning and in the evening for five days.

Never take two doses of Paxlovid at the same time. If you have missed a dose, you can take it as soon as possible if it has been less than eight hours. If it has been longer, skip the missed dose.

Possible side effects of Paxlovid include:

  • Changed sense of taste
  • High blood pressure
  • Resistance to HIV medicines
  • Diarrhea
  • Liver problems
  • Muscle aches
