When you’re giving your all at work, accidents can happen. Many times, the First Aid kit isn’t going to cut it. When that happens, the first thing you should do is come to Advance ER.

I’m at work and I’m hurt—what do I do?

“I’ve treated HVAC technicians with metal slivers in their eyes, gymnastics coaches with broken and sprained ankles, and food industry workers with severe burns,” said Advance ER physician Dr. Joseph Meier. “My best advice is to come to Advance ER immediately where you can walk in and receive prompt medical care with no wait time.”

“It’s advisable to not try to drive yourself when you’re injured at work. Get a supervisor or coworker to drive you, or call 911 if you have severe bleeding, loss of consciousness or other serious signs of trauma,” said Dr. Meier.

Who will pay for my injury?

Since the number crunching and the paperwork can be trying, don’t expect your employer to be happy, but the state law for Workers’ Compensation clearly gives you the right to be evaluated and treated by a medical professional. To do your part, you must notify your supervisor as soon as possible. At Advance ER, we know how to start the paperwork for Workers’ Compensation and our friendly office staff can advise you on the next steps.

So don’t let the paperwork deter you from seeking medical help. “Some of the worst advice is to wait and see if it gets better,” said Dr. Meier. “Many injuries can improve faster with prompt medical care and putting off care can actually cause more problems down the road.”

In addition, injuries that initially don’t appear too severe can time-out of the Workers’ Compensation application deadline by the time symptoms worsen and become a real problem. “If we have an initial consultation on the books, it’s easier to do the follow up weeks, months, even years down the road if the injury becomes more problematic,” said Dr. Meier.
