It’s Strep Season – Get Tested If You Have These Symptoms

Symptoms of Strep Throat & When to Seek Care

As we find ourselves in the midst of strep season, it's essential to stay informed and aware of the symptoms associated with strep throat, so you know when to seek medical care. This common bacterial infection can cause a range of symptoms, some of which are often mistaken for a common cold.

The best way to confirm a diagnosis is to get tested, particularly if you're experiencing several of these symptoms, or if they linger or worsen over time. At Advance ER, our team is proud to offer diagnostic testing for a wide range of conditions, including strep throat.

Recognizing the Symptoms

Strep throat is characterized by a collection of symptoms that might seem common but can develop into severe discomfort if left untreated. One of the most common signs of strep is constant throat pain that develops quickly and worsens. It is typically accompanied by a fever and swollen glands. Many people with strep throat also report pain when trying to swallow food or water.

A general unwell feeling, loss of appetite, abnormal sense of taste, headache, and nausea can also be accompanying symptoms of strep throat. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, it is important to get tested immediately, as symptoms can become more extreme if left untreated. Some strains of strep can even lead to scarlet fever if they’re not treated properly.

When to Get Tested & How to Find Relief

A severe sore throat accompanied by fever or chills warrants testing for strep. If you are diagnosed, you will be prescribed antibiotics by your provider.

Antibiotics help to kill the bacteria causing the infection and reduce the duration of symptoms. Penicillin or amoxicillin are often the first line of treatment. It's crucial to take the full course of prescribed antibiotics (even if symptoms improve) to ensure the infection is fully eradicated.

Alongside antibiotics, over-the-counter pain relievers such as ibuprofen can also be used to manage pain and reduce fever. It's also recommended to rest, stay hydrated, and avoid irritants like smoke to help the throat heal.
